Ogun Shut Down Factory Over River Pollution In Ajura Town

Ogun State Government has arrested a situation that could have led to waterborne diseases and other health complications, by shutting down a company known as  Harvest Feed and Processing Ltd, along Ajura-Ogere-Iperu road in Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area in the state. 

TheCaveat.com.ng reports that Special Adviser to the Governor on Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), Hon. Farouk Akintunde who doubles as the Chairman, Ogun State Task Force on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, disclosed this over the weekend. 

He said the factory was shut down for polluting Molibu river, which is the only source of water in the Community.

According to Akintunde government swung into action after receiving a petition from Ajura Youth Development Associations against the factory for discharging chemical waste water into their river, which not only polluted the river, but also caused the death of all living water creatures, thus rendering fishermen jobless. 

The Special Adviser said the petition disclosed that the polluted water poses a serious risk to the health of members of the community, which could lead to waterborne diseases and other health complications.

According to the petition, the river which serves as a crucial source of water for washing, bathing and other domestic purposes is now contaminated due to nonchalant attitude of the company to health hazards of the community through its waste dispossal. 

Akintunde further explained that shutting down of the factory became imperative so as to lunch a comprehensive investigation into the waste disposal practice of the factory and prevent future reoccurrence.

He reiterated that the Agency position is to go all out on facilities that will not adhere strictly to regulations of the state government.
