A major accident that could have claimed lives of scores of people was averted by God's grace, on Thursday when a cement laden truck lost control and crashed into the median at Tollgate, in Ado-Odo/Ota Council area of Ogun State.
TheCaveat.com.ng gathered that the truck loaded with bags of cement, descending from Sango-Ota end of Lagos-Abeokuta Road suddenly crashed into the median at the densely populated tollgate, after experiencing a brake failure.
An eyewitness account said the accident which occurred at about 2.20pm, however crushed the leg of a commercial motorcycle, a.k.a. Okada man, leaving his bicycle trapped under the fallen truck.
“One of the Okada man who narrowly escaped being killed by the truck, but had one of his legs totally crushed has been rushed to the hospital. He has been rushed to General Hospital at Ota” an eyewitness who gave his name as Akeem Osho told our Correspent.
The victim's motorcycle could be seen trapped under the truck.
The truck was descending the slope at Shoprite-Dalemo axis when the driver reportedly lost control.
Meanwhile, officers of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE and Federal Road Safety Corps were on ground at the scene managing the traffic flow.
Reacting, the Ota Divisional Commander of TRACE, Salau Hammed, advised motorists to always reduce their speed anytime they are approaching sloppy road such as Tollgate.
He said experience has shown that nonchalant attitude of motorists in properly checking their vehicles and ensuring they are fit before putting them on road, often cause avoidable accidents.
