After hours of uncertainty surrounding the status of Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police, the Presidency has confirmed that he resigned from office and was not sacked.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday.

According to Onanuga, the former police chief cited personal reasons for his decision to step down.

“The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention,” he said.

Earlier reports, however, suggested that Egbetokun was asked to step aside during a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Monday evening.

“It was in that meeting he was asked to go,” a senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

Sources further disclosed that the former police boss was specifically summoned to the Presidential Villa, stressing that the visit was not routine.

“He was called in. It wasn’t a routine visit,” another source added.

Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023. Prior to his appointment, he served as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
