Ogun State Police Commissioner, CP Bode Ojajuni, has appealed to the state residents to remain security conscious, promptly report suspicious activities, and continue to cooperate with the Police in the collective effort to rid society of criminal elements.
He made the appeal following an anonymous tip-off leading to foiled cover-up and arrest of three suspects over a criminal case of murder and attempted secret burial of a family member.
The suspects of the heinous crime, who are currently cooling off their feet in police custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, include two family members, namely, Salia Karikari ‘M’, aged 15, Jubril Karikari ‘M’, aged 12, and Maureen Okirie ‘F’, aged 35, a relation of the murdered victim.
Thecaveat.com.ng gathered that detectives of the Ajuwon Division of the state Police Command, apprehended the suspects on Thursday, following an anonymous tip-off regarding suspicious activities in the area.
Confirming the report, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said acting promptly on the information, detectives arrived at the scene and caught one of the suspects attempting to bury a blood-drenched corpse in a shallow grave, in what is suspected to be an effort to conceal the crime.
He noted that preliminary examination of the body revealed a severe injury to the victim’s head. Further investigation indicates that the victim was allegedly attacked with a wooden pestle, while the other suspects, who are relatives of the deceased, conspired in the commission of the crime and the attempted cover-up.
It was further revealed that the suspected murder weapon has been recovered, and the body has been deposited at the Life Channel Mortuary, Olambe, for autopsy.
While condemning the act, CP Ojajuni described it as a cruel, inhumane and deeply disturbing incident, particularly as it involved close family members.
"Such acts of violence and attempts to conceal crimes will not be tolerated under any circumstance", the CP stressed assuring the public that the Command is fully committed to a thorough and transparent investigation.
He emphasized that all those found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
