Eid-El Kabir (Ileya Festival): 22 Killed, 152 Injured In Road Accidents –TRACE Corps Commander

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) has said that no fewer than 22 people were sent to untimely grave while 152 others critically injured and presently lying in hospitals after their involvement in various accidents that occurred within the state during the just concluded Islamic festive period (Ileya Festival ), Eid-El-Kabir.

The TRACE Corps Commander/Chief Executive, Comdr ‘Seni Ogunyemi who disclosed this to TheCaveat.info said the total number of 74 cases of road crashes (accidents) were recorded during the period in question, while motor vehicles were involved in 43 cases with 108 people injured and 18 killed.

He further analyzed that 31 cases were recorded for commercial motorcycle (Okada) during which 4 persons were killed and 44 others injured.

The TRACE Corps Commander said the state Governor Ibikunle Amosun showed displeasure over the high rate of accident during the festive period and directed that TRACE should ensure such sad occurrences did not repeat itself at any time in the state.

Introduction of TETS
Ogunyemi said following the development, TRACE has redoubled its efforts in ensuring achievement of safety on the road; part of which he said is introduction of TRACE Emergency Traffic Service (TETS).

According to the TRACE Boss TETS is basically to focus on emergency traffic challenges and rapid response to such, which is additional information to already created TRACE Traffic Whistle Blower in Ogun State. 

He gave further road safety tips for public consumption as follow:

Road Safety Tips
• Pay attention to the road and the actions of other drivers.

• Avoid making assumptions about the intentions of other road users.

• Alert other drivers of your intentions by using the trafficator and other turn signals.

• Always use your seat belt.

• Obey the yellow light.

• Obey all traffic signals.

• Avoid texting while driving.

• Always stop when you see the red light or stop sign.

• Avoid over-speeding.

• Be extra careful when it rains or the weather is foggy.

• Be patient.

• Avoid drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs.

• While driving, avoid being mysterious and be predictable.

• Be the bigger person by yielding the right of way.

• Avoid unnecessary stops, turns by having a destination in mind.

• Make room for stopped vehicles.

• Make sure you avoid making calls while driving. Also, avoid anything that may take your eyes off the road.

• Only use your headlights when you have to.

• Be courteous towards other road users.

• Make time for proper vehicle maintenance.
